What does silence sound like?

Fingers on asdf jkl;

The truck starts and the garage door goes down. In preparation I have turned off the news that stays on all day.  I've heard enough bad news for one day.

The horn honks. I look out the window and yell, “Didja forget something?” My husband responds, “Nah, I got it.”

He hops back in the truck and backs out. I have silence for about 20 more minutes.

Woof woof woof WOOF. Woof woof woof WOOF.

Ruff. Ruff ruff. Ruff. Ruff ruff ruff.

Squeaky wheel trailer passing by, attached to the back of a truck.

Toes cracking. Bad habit.

Squawk SQUAWK. This is THE MOST annoying sound in our neighborhood. Someone has a giant red parrot. He only brings it out sometimes. How timely to do this in my quiet time. Maybe I've learned to tune it out. I don't know if he's cleaning the cage or letting the bird have fresh air.

Tick tick tick tick tick.

Cars leaving the neighborhood. I bet they are going to pick up kids from school. I opt for a few more minutes of silence. Mine rides the bus.

Wind chimes sway softly in a light breeze.

Hawk haaaawk from overhead.

Woof woof woof. WOOF goes the big dog.

Ruff. Ruff ruff. Ruff responds the distant little dog.

An airplane is flying over. I think about yesterday’s date and today's bad news from yesterday.

Tick tick tick tick tick tick goes the second hand on the clock.

Bug noise from the trees. I think I’ve finally seen once of these bugs recently. It was dead and it looked like a dried up baby frog with wings. Yuck.

The bug noise is a common summer sound. Today it is mixed with the breeze that announces the next season.

UPS just went barreling by. Nothing for us today.

Simmering sound.

The wind chimes remind me of swinging on the playground - not sure why.

Other bird sounds I can’t spell.

iPhone bloop - goes a text message. It’s Toys “R” Us with another “Limited Time Offer!”

Squeaky bus brakes come to a stop. Beep beep beep beep. First school bus in the neighborhood doesn’t have to make the loop. It backs up and turns around. I’ve got about ten more minutes for Bus #28.

Whistle whistle WHISTLE, SCREEEEECH. That’s my tea kettle calling.

I’m back. Chime chime chime. Tick tick tick. WOOF, ruff ruff. Toes cracking. Bug noise, tweet tweet tweet.

I’m going to sit on the porch and relax for five minutes with my tea.

45 minutes later.....

Copied, pasted and posted with noise,

This was a writing prompt from Mama’s Losin’ It. Listen to the sounds in your house for 5 or 10 minutes. Write about what you hear. (inspired by The Aums)
