Budgeting for Popcorn

Whether your counting your calories, counting Weight Watchers points or counting your pennies at the grocery store I have found a "cost" effective way to enjoy popcorn.

You know when you find a product you love at the grocery store and it starts to catch on a then you can't find it anymore? Well that happened with me and the Skinny Pop (Pops Up in a Box) Popcorn. It had finally come down to me only finding it at the commissary and then I worried that if I went on a military payday, I wouldn't find it at all.

I couldn't go back to air popped. I wouldn't go back to any of the other "light" microwave popcorn brands that taste like cardboard and I refuse to pay what Amazon was charging for it. I already considered it a luxury grocery item like a "special occasion popcorn", except I ate it every day.

So I was in the commissary one day looking at the Skinny Popcorn boxes and the price and looked down and saw a 32-ounce bag of Jolly Time White Popcorn for $1.47.

One bag of Jolly Time would equal about 21 servings of my recipe. So I did the math, it cost 7 cents a serving for the Jolly Time. If I purchased 21 servings of the Skinny Popcorn it would be 27.86!

Never again.

Never again.

I decided to get the Jolly Time and keep it budget friendly - grocery budget, calorie budget, weight watchers points budget

So we got the cheap part. Here's how I made the popcorn healthy AND delicious with NO OIL!

Weight Watchers Popcorn

What you need:

  • 3 TBSP Popcorn kernels
  • Lunch bag
  • Popcorn Spray
  • Popcorn Seasoning

Add 3 tablespoons of popcorn kernels to the lunch bag and fold loosely at the top. Lay the bag in the microwave folded side down and cook for 2 minutes (microwaves vary).

I played around with this until I got it just right.

Helpful Hints

  1. It pops slower than microwave popcorn with oil, so the first time I took it out too soon. The next time I left it in too long and burned it. Third time's a charm.
  2. Spray inside the bag and shake, spray and shake again.
  3. Add your seasoning inside the bag and shake, add more if desired and shake again. This keeps seasoning dust from getting everywhere. Fifth time's a charm on that tip.
  4. I used a coffee scoop, which it like a heaping tablespoon because I don't want to get cheated out of the kernels that don't pop.

In the end this is all that's left unpopped.

You can make this as costly as you like. But if you have a food allowance, 3 TBSP is 4 Weight Watchers Smart Points or 165 calories and only $.07 a serving.
