Star Light Star Bright

I marked my calendar a few weeks ago and set a reminder for today, December 21st at 5:00pm to view the “Christmas Star”. Not an actual star, but Jupiter and Saturn appearing so close together they appear brightly as one. It won’t happen again until March 2080, and not in December again until 2874 when the Great Conjunction will happen on Christmas Day.

Sunset for us this evening was at 5:03 pm. I was to look towards the southwest to view the Christmas star. I went outside, viewed the compass from my watch and turned in the direction of “southwest”. I was texting back and forth with a friend of mine when I finally saw something.

After I was sure it wasn’t an airplane, I stayed focused on the “red star” for almost thirty minutes and finally said a prayer to it before coming back in the house. By that point I wasn’t totally convinced that was the right star because it never looked “starry”.

I came back in the house, put my glasses on and got on the computer to see if any pictures had been posted that looked like what I saw. It was confirmed then that I was looking in the wrong direction.

I opened my compass again, with my glasses on, and clearly read that southwest was in the opposite direction of where I’d been looking.

Star Light Star Bright, the first star I saw tonight was Mars. So I prayed to Mars. That’s gotta be good luck or something.

I wouldn’t have seen the Christmas star even if I was looking in the right direction. The southwest view from my house had an obstructed view. I texted my mom in time. She and daddy went for a ride to look at Christmas lights and she saw the Christmas star. She said she was holding back tears, so it had to have been remarkable. That’s good enough for me.
